Happy Teenagers?

Whether it's the east or the west, one common characteristic of teenagers is the strong desire to both conform and rebel ... Conform to peers and rebel against the elder generation ...

In the west, teenagers try very hard to mingle effortlessly with their peer group ... This is true to a large extent for India as well, however the desire to conform to family keeps a check at the background ...

And the War-Scar goes to ...

Meenakshi ... Thanks for the compliment! ...

maddss123 ... It's very difficult for us to view anything objectively ... The version that we have with us is the version fed to us by the media ... The real truth is something which will continue to evade the vast majority of us ... You're right, it's definitely not as simple as it looks (Or as I've made it seem) ...

Kalyanee ... Someone said ... "If you're not confused, you're not paying attention" ... It's a perfectly natural state to be in! ... And thank goodness I found someone who appreciates the story of the Baba Yaga ... The Baba is definitely is one of the coolest characters in Russian literature ...

NN ... Looks like the blocking issue has been resolved ... Looking forward to your comments here! ...

Tribute to a Tyrant called Saddam

maddss123 ...

Interesting article, although it's easy to misinterpret the message you're trying to convey (as has been done by some comments below) ... Enough has been spoken and written about what Saddam did wrong for Iraq, but not much has been written about what he did right for it ...

The tone of this blog entry reminds me of a new show on Zee TV  - Ravana, which claims to tell the other story of Ravana ... He has been portrayed so far in a negative light, and this new show will try to show his real persona to the audience ...

Bunty ... Thanks for your comments! ... And mothering is defnitely not something I need now! ... I will definitely be more active in blogging and commenting than I was in my last unsuccessful blogging venture in blogger.com ... Sulekha seems so much more vibrant and active ...

NN ... (I hope you don't mind if I call you NN instead of Mom in my posts and comments!) ... Thanks for dropping by ... The War Scars article was an old one, and I look forward to submitting some new material ...

By the way, Bunty and NN ... I have accidentally blocked your profiles in my site and am getting some error when I try to unblock them ... I have written to the editor of Sulekha to get this issue resolved ... So hopefully you should be able to comment in my blogs again soon! ...

Supriyad ... Very deep ponderings ... i read your review on the Kabul Express and was touched ... Will make it a point to watch the movie soon ...

I agree with what Maria says ... It's the small imperfections which add character and style to writing ... This is an informal blog after all! ...

And for you Flimflam ... When we criticize someone, it says less about that person, and says more about your need to be critical ...

Abe Lincoln said ... “He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help.”

But Mark Twain also said ... “One mustn't criticize other people on grounds where he can't stand perpendicular himself”

Book Review: 'Daddy-A Bouquet of Memories' by Nargis Natarajan

Ekta,

That was a lovely book review! ... You've captured the essence of the most important moments and characters in the book very concisely ... From your post it's obvious that you have a very open style of writing ... I have read plenty of book reviews for my Mom, and this was one which truly came from the heart ...

Thanks!
Misha..

Thanksgiving? No Thanks!

Hi Mom,

I had no idea that the simple email I wrote about my experiencecs would've generated so much of interest! ... After going through all the comments, I thought I'd defintely drop in and give a comment of my own ...

desi360, Enzo - It was nice to know that some readers could identify with the experiences that I'd been through ... Braving the cold and wind early inthe morning does have an exciting adventurous feel to it ... But kids these days go overboard ... For the Playstation 3 release last week, some of them camped out in tents for days outside the store! ...

Bilingual
- Thanks for the advice on writing to the President of Best Buy, but I don't really see this experience as a discomfort  ... Shopping was secondary to me here (I had already finished most of my electronics shopping days before Thanksgiving) ... It was more of a touristy thing (That's the reason I took my camera as well!) ... Also, in the future when I decide NOT to go for a sale like this, it's better to have an experience backing me up! ...

panditkososvo - I admire your diligence in writing that long poem about the whole experience! ... I especially liked this line "But being hooked to Blogs can do u better" ... I look forward to being hooked to more blogs on sulekha from now on ...You're right, this stuff can get addictive! ...

Building Bridges Breaking Walls

Munir.Akram ...

I did not want to dignify your stupid comments by even replying to them, but the venemous content just compells me to say a word to you ...

Not everyone who comments on this blog agrees with the views of the writer, but there is a decent and civilised way to disagree ... Personal rude attacks and cutting and pasting irrelevant pieces of news from somewhere do not constitute that ... It does nothing but show your immaturity ...

I've seen you rudely commenting on Nargis' blogs before, using other names like Black beak ... You seem to lack not only moral fibre but courage as well and are therefore hiding behind these false names ... At least Nargis has the courage to say what she wants in the open, using her real name ... And she has the courage not to delete your filthy comments, even though she could do so in the click of a button ...

I doubt if you've even read the article, since none of your comments seem to be remotely relevant to the topic ... They are just random rabid ranting ...

You seem to be an insecure teenager who has had an inadequate life ... You are making up for some serious lack of attention in your personal life by trying to garner attention in the webspace by making outrageous comments on other blogs ... Grow up, boy ...

Users like you should be blacklisted from Sulekha ... I will say this only once ... Shut up and let the rest of us carry on an intelligent conversation ... Or I will call up your parents and cut your net privileges ...

Indian Born Confused Muslim

Most people posting in these threads seem to connect all the evil that has ever happened in this world with the religion Islam. I just can’t see how the others can be so blind to some other horrifying historical facts showing that fanatical Islamist fundamentalists are not the only ones who are intolerant to others -

  • Act of Intolerance 1 - Hitler and the Nazi regiment wiped out 6 Million Jews in Europe 60 years back
  • Act of Intolerance 2 – The Pol Pot regime in Cambodia killed over a million people in one of the worst genocides in modern times
  • Act of Intolerance 3 – The Hutus and Tutsis in Africa killed over 800,000 people in northern Africa over tribal intolerance

And none of the above acts involved a hint of Islam.

  • Act of Intolerance 4 – Saddam wiped out hundreds of thousands of Kurds in Iraq after the First Gulf War, for political suppression
  • Act of Intolerance 5 – The Russians killed over 1 Million Afghans and critically crippled over 3 Million in the 80s, again for political suppression
  • Act of Intolerance 6 – Milosevic is infamous for his “ethnic cleansing” of Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as recent as less than 10 years ago

What we must understand is that Intolerance cannot and should not be attributed to a religion or caste or race of people. Intolerance is a trait which is common to Humanity, and rather than hide the fact by blaming a particular religion we should take collective blame for it as a race. No religion can claim that at any point in their history their followers have not practiced some form of intolerance towards other religions. And no religion in the world advocates mass-murder or the killing of innocents.

I have seen and read enough about Intolerance to recognize it when I see it.

When an Indian was thrown out of a first class train compartment in South Africa.

When a courageous old black lady was asked to leave the bus in a small town in America because she was seated in the White Section.

When a man is not allowed to drink from the same well as the others in his village in rural India, just because he belongs to a different caste.

When innocent people are kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic extremists in Iraq.

When a Christian missionary is burnt alive with his little son by tribals in East India.

When Sikhs are discriminated against after 9/11 in America, just because they wear a turban on their heads.

The Klu Klux Clan, the Black Pathers, and like Black Beak mentioned - Nazism and Communism ...

And I also see intolerance when people make comments like these –

As usual -" I cry for every drop of blood..blah blah blah" are meant to hide the fact that Islam is Evil.  Islam's founder, Mohammed, created a cult that glorified murder, stealing and rape. Is this ideology fit for civilised living? Unless Islam as an ideology is wiped out, there can be no peace in the world.

It was tough reading about a mass killer masquerading as a prophet. It was even more tough to read the Koran. (I encourage people to read the Koran and liberate themselves from Islam). As I flipped a couple of pages, it was apparent to me that it was only fit for a person with an IQ close to 0. No sane person can believe the ample BS that is written in that book. To believe the Koran you must extraordinarily dumb. Many people call the Koran violent. I think it is D-U-M-B with shades of violence thrown in.

Seriously, as I mentioned before - good muslims can be seen INSPITE of Islam and not because of it. A "good muslim" would have let the dying kafir be. .

We dont need Muslims to be angels. We just need them to stop being parasites and killers. I have a blog that details the murder of 250 hindus by muslims since May 2006. In case you cant count that is approximately 2-3 hindus killed every day by Islam and its fundamentalism.

The last comment needs special mention. What kind of sick individual keeps a track of the number of atrocities that one group has inflicted on another. Is it a personal vendetta you have against Muslims in particular? Why do you feel the urge to celebrate the dark side of humanity, when there are so many positive things that you should be celebrating. Anyone can make a list. I can make a long list detailing each and every act of violence committed by every single religion in the world, but ultimately what purpose does it serve? Does it bring those unfortunate individuals back? Does it bring solace to their family members? It does nothing but fuel the fire of intolerance.

Someone mentioned in this thread that the only way to make the world a better place is to eradicate Islam and all it’s followers. Come on!! How naïve can you get!! Today you think the evil is Islam. Till 15 years back it was Communism which was seen as the greatest threat to mankind. 60 years back, the British were enemy no 1 for Indians. Trust me, mankind will always find some other group to take the place of the current day villain, no matter how we try to change the world.

And hatred will continue to exist unless we as individuals get rid of this sick attitude of blind intolerance towards people who don’t follow the same beliefs as us.
